If you asked 100 people “do you think you’re creative?” most would probably say “not really”, and a majority of them may say they have not progressed past the stick figure drawings of their childhood. But skill level and creativity are not the same thing. I was not necessarily the kid who could draw, but I was the kid who could create.
My work aims to take the tools of childhood – paper, scissors, glue – and the shapes of childhood – lines, scribbles, blocks – and create vibrant, three dimensional artwork. My compositions are often patterns of light and dark, shape and form, color and contrast that intrigue me, and working in paper allows me to explore those visual components without regard to the accuracy of representing a specific subject or object.
Lauren Schwartz was born in sunny Miami but grew up in the Garden State. She’s always been a bit of a “nerdy creative”, completing a BA in Economics from NYU in 1990, followed up by a BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design in 1995. She’s built a career out of using both sides of her brain by working as both a designer and a programmer; and is currently Partner & Creative Director at Outside the Box Interactive in Jersey City. After working in the digital realm for 20-plus years, she’s decided to get creative in the physical realm again by working with her hands and tangible media. Lauren’s three-dimensional paper creations are a physical manifestation of her mathematical mind meeting her imaginative inner child, who just wants to create beautiful things for others to enjoy.
